Our Story

Built for the learners
AI forgot to include

SpanNova exists because every person, regardless of how their brain works, deserves a way to interact with a world that is increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.

The Beginning

It started with Zoey

Zoey is my 14-year-old daughter. Her myriad of diagnoses has taught me patience, compassion, and a fundamental belief that we must meet people where they are, not where we expect them to be.

Navigating the special needs system as a parent means learning a new language: IEPs, IFSPs, ISPs, evaluation reports, accommodation matrices, service logs. It means attending meetings where your child is described in clinical terms that bear little resemblance to the person you know. It means advocating, relentlessly, for a child who cannot always advocate for herself.

It also means watching the world accelerate in ways that could either leave Zoey behind, or carry her forward, depending entirely on whether anyone bothers to build the bridge.

I always believed technology could level the playing field for people who learn differently. From calculators to voice-to-text. The tool changed, but the belief never did.

The Problem

AI arrived.
But not for everyone.

When large language models became accessible to everyday people, I saw immediately what they could mean for learners like Zoey. An infinitely patient tutor. A communication partner that never gets tired. A tool that could explain the same thing seventeen different ways until one of them landed.

But I also saw the gap. AI in its default state knows nothing about the person it is talking to. It doesn't know that Zoey processes language differently. It doesn't know her medication schedule, her IEP goals, her comfort interests, or how she tends to communicate.

I experienced the frustration of prompt engineering firsthand, and the effort required to get AI to give me what I actually needed. And then I asked the question that became SpanNova: how do we adapt AI to help a child like Zoey?

The answer wasn't a new AI. It was a bridge between the learner's world and the AI's understanding.

Our Mission

They deserve to be part of this

AI is transforming how people learn, work, communicate, and access opportunity. This transformation is happening whether or not the special needs community is included in it.

SpanNova's mission is simple: ensure that those with learning differences are part of this AI revolution, not an afterthought.

We give caregivers a way to help every learner interact with AI on their own terms. SpanNova converts the clinical knowledge in IEPs, medical records, and service plans into a portable AI profile that travels with the learner, from teacher to teacher, session to session, home to school and back.

🌉
Bridge
Connect clinical knowledge in disability records to AI systems that can act on it.
🔒
Privacy
Every profile lives on the caregiver’s device. SpanNova doesn’t operate a database of children’s health or education records — your account holds a license, never the profile. The full answer is in the FAQ.
✈️
Portable
Works with Gemini, ChatGPT, or Claude. The learner's profile travels with them.
♾️
Lifespan
From early intervention through school into adulthood. IFSP, IEP, and ISP at every stage.
How We Got Here

A year of thinking
before a line of code

June 2025
The first sketch. A mockup drawn on a phone: picture-based prompts, functional categories, a way for learners to tell AI what they needed. The idea existed before the infrastructure did.
Early 2026
The technology caught up. Large language models became capable of following detailed system instructions reliably enough to build on. The bridge became buildable.
Spring 2026
SpanNova is built. A full-lifespan adaptive profile engine covering IEP parsing, medication timing, AT safety taxonomy, neuropsychological score mapping, district policy analysis, recency-aware session starters, and a Communication Contract designed around how learners actually communicate.
Today
Zoey has a Gem. On her school Chromebook, an AI tutor now knows exactly who she is: her goals, her interests, her communication style, her medication schedule. For the first time, the AI meets her where she is.

Every learner deserves a seat at the table AI is building

SpanNova was built by a parent who refused to accept that the AI revolution would happen without her daughter. It was built for every family navigating a system that was never designed with their child in mind. And it was built on the belief that when we design for those the world forgot, we build something better for everyone.
